• IMG_1765Today’s post is going to be a short one as it comes to you from the RV “Base Station”.

I had to get up early today to go and pick up the shirts (SHHHHH it a surprise for everyone) from the printers.  Once home I kissed and loved on my family, loaded up in the RV & shoved off.  I am nervous, but excited to get this adventure on the way.  We will meet at a location that the RD has specified and I will go with them for final transport to the beach house.  Tomorrow is GO-TIME

Thank you everyone for the love & support that has already been shown to me!  I will make all of you proud!

  • Today is Thanksgiving and I am SO VERY thankful that my heart is just full.  My son came to me and asked me to take him hunting.  So yesterday we made plans for an early departure, pulled out camo cold weather clothes & packed rifles.  We headed out the door at 5:15 making out way out to the same stand as I shot the buck from yesterday.  Not too hopeful on seeing anything today however there was a possibility since 3/4 of the corn I put out the day before was gone.  I doubt 1 deer ate all of that.

We stat in the stand until about 8:AM……my wiggle-worm was having a hard time with being quiet but having a harder time sitting still, as you can imagine a 14yr old boy would have.  TO my surprise a beautiful large doe showed up the foliage in front of us and was making her way to the corn, right then she must have caught some motion of us getting the rifles up and in place because she stopped, looked then turned broadside and moved behind a little bit more dense brush.  My son wanted to shoot my small caliber .223 this morning and I knew that he would not be able to make the clean, soft tissue penetrating shot that was needed with that round I told him that I was going to take her since in was carrying my scoped 30-06. I settled down into the show and as about to squeeze the trigger when he quickly raised his hands to cover his ears…….well you guessed it.  That was all an already spooked doe needed, she got so scared she snorted and blew, turned to the left and ran straight into a tree….jumped snorted and ran off blowing the entire time.

I look at my son, it was not 8:30 and asked…..you ready to go home since there is nothing even close to us now.

Even missing a deer this had to be my best morning hunt ever.  We laughed & joked about that the rest of the day.  Told the story overt thanksgiving dinner and laughed some more.

Once everyone left for the night I finished my clothes packing accepted that I am not getting off cedar island for day 2 and would have to make up the miles on day 3 then just pray that I can hang on to 40+ miles per day afterwards.

    Until tomorrow friends…..

  • Today was all about deer hunting.  I got a message from my buddy telling me that there were 3 new rubs at one of his stands that I had not hunted in for a long time & if I wanted to I could hunt it in the morning.  Absolutely !! I Said, I mean come one I have only one small doe in the freezer for the year this far.  Certainly not enough to feed us for the year.

That morning I get dressed and travel to the stand, it was cold but beautiful.  I sat there from about 6:AM – 9:PM on the only thing I saw was a pile of corn.  NOTHING alive, no birds, no squirrels not even dropping leaves.  An absolute bust of a morning.

That evening I decide to go back out to my stand and sit from 3:PM until dark.  Still carrying my grandmother’s Marlin 30-30 I was really hoping for my 1st gun kill.  See when my grand mother passed she knew I was starting to get into deer hunting & she left me that rifle.  The very next season I shot my 1st NC Deer, a magnificent 8 point buck, that we had mounted & still hangs on the wall in my living room.  That year I made a promise that as long as I have her rifle I will use it to harvest my 1st Rifle shot deer of every season and THIS year would be no different.

As I made my way back into the woods I still saw no indication that the deer were frequenting this location & I was thinking about bringing my climbing stand out the next time.  Once in the stand I got comfortable as I assumed it was going to be another long evening.  I got out my tablet and started to read & make notes about TU & other stuff that had to be done.  Surfed Facebook and Instagram for a little while then about 4:00 I heard this sound from behind me.  To my surprise it was a gorgeous older 8pt buck walking out of the woods to the corn pile.  I slowly raised my rifle and played the move & freeze game as he would look at me then dip his head.  Finally as I could sense that he was getting really nervous & was going to bolt at any second I super quietly pulled the hammer back, squeeze the trigger and let it rip.  DANG, a bad shot I thought as it did not drop in its tracks.  Upon fist glance from the stand I could not see any blood, I knew that I hit it, I hear him crash around as a wounded deer sounds like, and was not too far away from me.  I sent a text message to my buddy, “Just Shot at a Buck, don’t think it was a good shot”

I sat nervously in the stand for as long as I could take it…..a whole 20 min then decided to get down and see if I could find any blood.  To my surprise I found more than I was hoping for.  Drop after drop I started track my possibly wounded deer.  I was even MORE surprised when I found this stunning buck lying in the woods not 30 yards from where I shot him. I loaded him up in the truck and off the skinning pole I went.  The remainder of the night was filled with skinning, quartering and dressing deer meat.  Exhausted I stopped for Ice & made it to the house for the night.  Shower & bed were the only things I wanted.  TU…….has to wait one more night!

    Update #1

Well this short update comes to you from one of my tree stands I am in while Whitetail deer hunting WIN_20151124_081740

Checking the weather last night it was predicted to be a cold morning & then checking the solunar tables it is supposed to be an “Excellent” hunting day.  Guess what……So far only 1 has been true

I expect the rest of the day to be filled with trying to finalize Day 2 & 3’s mileage plans, ferry plans, camping plans, making lists, pulling out all my gear & making phone calls for TU.  Hopefully Dad & Mom will be onboard to help with some 9of this.  I will update more after BCRT

    Update #2

Tonight we had a pleasant visitor, Hannah from the Sanford Herald joined us to take some photos for my upcoming article on “Cold Weather Exercising”.  Once done with the announcements, photos we went off for our regular 4.22 mile run.  This will be only the 2nd time in 2 weeks that I have ran.  MAN what a difference tapered & rested legs can make.  The pace was quick, water was cool & the breathing was easy!

Back at home…….well I just went to bed, TU will have to wait another day.

  •

Today I had to go into work to finish up some loose ends before I could start my vacation / deer hunting time. What an extremely difficult day it was, lots of little tasks but they required my full attention.  Something that I was almost unable to anything other than TU.

Finally finished with work and got home to the awesome Boston Butt that I had in the oven all day, which 5was so tender that I was able to fork shred it while the wife fixed the sides; amazing dinner!

Once the kitchen was cleaned I retired to the computer for a little TU work with all the confidence that I would finally be able to hammer out Day 1, 2 & 3’s mileage “A” plan.  These 3 days would get me across Cedar Island and would include 2 ferry rides.

For some reason I always get stuck on Day 12 having to burn a bunch of time because I can not figure out how to make the last ferry off Cedar Island to Ocracoke……….and today would provide to be no different.  My best plan so far is to take my time on day 21, catch either the 6 or 8PM ferry or push it a little and catch the 5 pm ferry.  Then I could really take my time on the 13 mile stretch on the Island to reduce some stress on the body.  The only problem  with being on the island for the night is that all the campgrounds are closed this time of year.  So on of tomorrow’s tasks will be to call the visitor’s center to see if we can park there overnight & catch the 1st ferry off the island.
